The Focus Challenge
How sharp is your focus today?
Quick-fire rounds built on real attention science.
Speed How fast anyone can react — and why.
Focus What conflicting information does to attention.
Memory How much attention holds at once — for everyone.
No pass, no fail. Every round demonstrates a universal effect of human attention — measured with your own numbers.
The science behind the rounds
Reaction. Simple reaction time — the gap between something changing and your first response is mostly wiring, not thinking.
Count the dots. Subitising — up to about three or four you just see the number; past that you switch to counting one at a time.
Kaufman, Lord, Reese & Volkmann (1949), American Journal of Psychology
Odd one out. Pop-out vs serial search — a single-feature difference jumps out no matter the grid size; a two-feature difference has to be checked item by item.
Sequence. Working-memory span — most people hold about seven items, give or take two, one of the most cited numbers in psychology.
Colour vs side. The Simon effect — where something appears interferes with deciding what it is, even when position is irrelevant to the task.
Word vs ink. The Stroop effect — reading is so automatic it interferes with naming a colour, even when you're told to ignore the word.
Switch the rule. Task-switching cost — changing rule costs real time, every time. The true price of "multitasking."
Stop the marker. Anticipation timing — predicting where a moving target will be is a different skill from reacting to where it already is.
Catch both. The attentional blink — for a brief window after spotting one target, a second target can go unseen entirely.
Word memory. False memory — the brain stores the gist of a list, not the exact words, so a word that merely fits the theme can feel just as remembered as one you actually saw.
